The forty years long production of Steve McCurry arrives at Villa Bardini with the retrospective Steve McCurry Icons: 100 photos chosen from the photographer among his most famous and beloved ones, together with Biba Giacchetti, the curator of the exhibition. The acrobatics of the monks in the Shaolin temple, the proud look of the portraits, landscapes destroyed by the war. The eyes of Sharbat Gula. The strength of Steve McCurry’s images consists in this connection with the most distant people, of different social condition and to let us recognize in those faces and situations because of the universality of human feelings and condition.
Steve McCurry’s black and white
A section is dedicated to his black and white photographs, taken in his first reportage in Afghanistan, country where he returned at least thirty times from then. It is 1979 when Steve McCurry wears afghan clothes and cross the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan to witness the war between mujahiddin and soviet army. He has only black and white films, but in these pictures we can see all the expressiveness of his most famous portraits. He manages to cross the border again with his shots, which will show this conflict to the West, only to have them sewed in his robes: the first project of Steve McCurry’s experience waits you in the first room.
