The World of Steve McCurry in one exhibitions. The forty years long career of the American photographer created an immense archive of images. Steve McCurry has photographed almost every place in the world: from Asia to South America, to the most recent images of Ethiopia and Italy, Steve McCurry immortalizes in various differences mankind, always in his lens.
Portraing mankind
200 photographs are included in the exhibition, also in large size. The visitors will find himself among places in Cambodia which recall spirituality, among aquatic landscapes of Burma and Sri Lanka, where the fishermen in Weligama perched on their poles. And then among images of wars and distruction, as the ones taken during the Gulf War in Ninteties or the 9/11, right behind Steve McCurry’s studio. His attention is always on most fragile creatures: civilians in war, refugees, and animals. There are also his iconic pictures from his most beloved countries, Afghanistan and India, with the gazes of the people who risk their own existence because of a more intrusive contemporary society: the nomadic people of India and the afghan refugees, among which cannot be missed Sharbat Gula.
The first black and white images
Among color images, fifteen black and white images are placed. It is the beginning of Steve McCurry as an international photographer, in 1979, with the shots of mujahidin during the war against USSR: thanks to these photographs, this conflict could be put under limelight of Western newspapers.
The exhibition is curated by Biba Giacchetti, with installation design by Peter Bottazzi, organizzed by Sudest57, Civita Mostre and Tempora. It will be open at La Sucrèrie in Lyon until May. 19th 2019. For more information, you can visit the website of the exhibition.
