Family portraits, desperate housewives, and tender dads. Numerous, different and unexpected family situation portraited by Elliott Erwitt and included in the exhibition Family, open at Mudec Photo in Milano from Oct. 16th 2019.

The curator, Biba Giacchetti, makes clear that “niente è più assoluto e relativo, mutevole, universale e altrettanto particolare come il tema della famiglia”. It is Elliott Erwitt’s ability to capture in his shots these different facets of what family means.

With Elliott Erwitt’s sixty black and white we travel through time, from Fifties, with the photo of his daughter Ellen, lying on the bed while his mother keep an eye on her, and then the proud and average American family, Jacqueline Kennedy at his husband’s funeral, until the new Millennium, with the Lavazza Calendar and the portrait of the young and pregnant women making coffee.

There are different families to identify with, or on which we diverge with a smile. This universal theme is a human issue which affects us all and it is portrayed by Elliott Erwitt with his unique, powerful, romantic and kindly ironic style.

Ritratti di famiglia, casalinghe disperate, mamme in attesa e papà affettuosi. Tante, diverse e inaspettate le situazioni fotografate da Elliott Erwitt e presenti nella mostra Family, aperta al Mudec Photo di Milano dal 16 ottobre.

La curatrice, Biba Giacchetti, mette infatti subito in chiaro che “niente è più assoluto e relativo, mutevole, universale e altrettanto particolare come il tema della famiglia”. È proprio la maestria di Elliott Erwitt a riuscire a cogliere nei suoi scatti queste innumerevoli sfaccettature di ciò che significa famiglia.

In sessanta scatti in bianco e nero riattraversa le epoche, dagli anni Cinquanta, con le foto della figlia Ellen distesa sul letto sotto l’occhio affettuoso della madre, passando per la rampante e media famiglia americana o per Jacqueline Kennedy al funerale del marito John, fino ad arrivare al nuovo Millennio con il calendario Lavazza e il ritratto della ragazza incinta che fa il caffè.

Poi la curatrice continua: “famiglie diverse, in cui riconoscersi, o da cui prendere le distanze con un sorriso. Un tema universale, che riguarda l’umanità, interpretato da Elliott Erwitt con il suo stile unico, potente e leggero, romantico o gentilmente ironico, cifra che ha reso questo autore uno dei fotografi più amati e seguiti di sempre.”
