Thirteen dogs, six zebus, six camels, three horses, some fishes and then monkeys, elephants, a walrus and an iguana. These and many others are all the animals captured by Steve McCurry‘s camera and selectioned by Biba Giacchetti to build up the exhibition. It will open on Dec. 15th at MUDEC PHOTO, the new section of the Museo delle Culture di Milano, dedicated to photography.
Steve McCurry comes back in Milan after long time with a thematic exhibition, Animals. Curated by Biba Giacchetti, the curator of Steve McCurry’s exhibitions in Italy and Europe, it presents a journey in the animal world, linked together with the human one.
Steve McCurry, photographer of the most fragile creatures
Steve McCurry has always paid attention to the most fragile people of society. His photographs are focused on civilians in wars, on endangered ethnic groups or on children. Animals, who share joys and pains with their human partners, could not be excluded. As working animals, who share the same fight for survival of their owners; or wild animals, feeling comfortable in the natural environment, but constantly threatened by the expansion of human space. And also animals forced to fight for a gruesome fun or the ones in the well-known images from the Gulf War. Apocalyptic scenes of landscape set on fire and animals, scattered and lost going through the destruction caused by men have won Steve McCurry the World Press Photo in 1992.
Free itinerary in the exhibition
Different tones of emotions take turn in the exhibition. Biba Giacchetti and Steve McCurry decided not to build an itinerary, but they leave the visitors free among the photographs. The exhibition ends with an hilarious gallery of portraits of animals and owners posing together. An interesting subject for all the people in the world, because we find there, besides two dogs, also goats, monkeys, snakes and two rats, on the neck of the girl chosen as photo for the poster of the exhibition.
The words of the curator
“Steve McCurry explores the human genre and through his images he offers us a journey in the proximity of animal planet, he speaks about relations and consequences. He invites us to reflect that we are not alone in the world, that there is a strong sharing between living beings, that is the mystery of life, that humans and animals share emotions and the same earth, which can be ruined only by the first ones.”.
The exhibition Animals by Steve McCurry is organized by MUDEC and 24Ore Cultura – Gruppo 24 Ore, Comune di Milano – Cultura and Sudest57. Curated by Biba Giacchetti, is opened at MUDEC PHOTO, in via Tortona 56, from Dec. 16th 2018 to Mar. 31st 2019. For more information about tickets, please visit the website of the exhibition.
