“Reading is a necessarily individual act, far more than writing”. These are the words of Italo Calvino at the exhibition Leggere by Steve McCurry at Palazzo Madama di Torino. The images of American photographer capture the intimacy of a individual act, as only great masters of photography can do.

Steve McCurry arrives in the city who hosts Salone del Libro, in the 32th edition, with 60 photographs in 70x100cm dedicated to the passion for reading. As in the exhibition Animals at MUDEC in Milano, where visitors find a gallery of portraits of owners and their pets, such as cocks, snakes and also some dogs, here in Turin too the images about this love for reading come from all over the world.

Visitors, in a free itinerary, can find people intent in reading, without noticing what is around them. Schools, noisy city life, temples or even war. No distinctions among the subjects: young and old people, from monks of Asia to the statue in Italy, from children at school in Afghanistan to the taxi driver lying on his car reading his newspaper in the crowded Bombay. 

60 images are an extract of the famous book by Steve McCurry On Reading, published in 2016, it is a homage to the Hungarian photographer André Kertesz.

The exhibition in Turin does not forget about McCurry’s own books. Among people reading, also fifteen covers in 70x100cm, besides his most important publications. The Imperial Way, his first book, Portraits, with the famous Afghan girl on the front, Unguarded Moment, where the boy in mid flight runs from his playmates, but not from Steve McCurry’s lens, and finally with the latest published books and dedicated to the countries he loves the most, India (2015) and Afghanistan (2017). Do not miss the biography, published in 2018, A Life in Pictures, where his sister Bonnie Reum McCurry tells the adventurous life of his brother.  

The exhibition is curated by Biba Giacchetti, with texts and quotes by Roberto Cotroneo. It is organized by Sudest57, Civita Mostre and Fondazione Torino Musei. “La lettura è un atto individuale, molto più dello scrivere”. Così recita una citazione di Italo Calvino nella mostra Leggere di Steve McCurry a Palazzo Madama di Torino. Le immagini del fotografo americano catturano l’intimità di un atto così solitario, come solo un grande maestro della fotografia sa fare.

Steve McCurry arriva nella città del Salone del Libro, alla sua 32esima edizione, proprio con 60 scatti in 70x100cm dedicati alla passione per la lettura. Proprio come nella mostra Animals del MUDEC di Milano troviamo una galleria di ritratti di persone con i propri animali di compagnia da tutto il mondo, con galli, serpenti e cagnolini, anche qui a Torino le testimonianze di questo amore sono raccolte da ogni angolo del mondo.

Il visitatore, in un percorso libero, potrà trovare persone assorte a leggere, senza curarsi di ciò che hanno attorno. Scuola, città, templi o guerra. Nessuna distinzione tra i soggetti ritratti: giovani e anziani, dai monaci dell’Asia alle statue dell’Italia, dai bambini a scuola in Afghanistan al tassista sdraiato sulla sua macchina a leggere il giornale nell’affollata Bombay. 

Le 60 immagini sono un estratto del celebre libro di Steve McCurry On Reading, Leggere in italiano, pubblicato nel 2016, omaggio al fotografo ungherese André Kertesz.

La mostra di Torino non trascura però i libri di McCurry. Tra persone assorte nella lettura, anche 15 copertine stampate in 70x100cm, affiancate alle sue pubblicazioni più importanti e famose. The Imperial Way, il suo primo libro, Portraits, con la famosa ragazza afgana in copertina, Unguarded Moment, di cui il bambino che corre sfugge ai compagni di gioco, ma non all’obiettivo di McCurry, per finire con gli ultimi libri pubblicati e dedicati ai paesi che più ama al mondo, India (2015) e Afghanistan (2017). Non manca la biografia pubblicata nel 2018, Una Vita per Immagini, in cui la sorella Bonnie Reum McCurry racconta la vita avventurosa del fratello. 

La mostra è curata da Biba Giacchetti, con testi e citazioni selezionati da Roberto Cotroneo. È organizzata da Sudest57, Civita Mostre e Fondazione Torino Musei.
