Antonin Kratochvil - biography

In amongst Antonin Kratochvil's many accomplishments are his six books of his photography, his first, "Broken Dream" won book of the year from London's Financial Times, his fifth, "Vanishing" won the Golden Light Award from the Maine Photographic Workshops. In addition is his Lucie Award for lifetime achievement, the Dorothy Lange Prize from Duke University, Leica Medal of Excellence, the Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography and a Cleo to mention but a few. Now, this photographer's signature style has moved into the realm of advertising. What art directors are seeing is what photo editors around the world have been impressed with for decades. Kratochvil's images have graced the pages of publishing's most renowned magazines and periodicals; Rolling Stone, New York Times Magazine, Fortune Magazine, Outside, Vanity Fair, Stern, Mother Jones, New York Magazine, Paris Match all have run photo spreads of his work ranging from the war in Iraq to Mongolian street children, Thailand's golden triangle and numerous portrait sessions with the likes of Harvey Keitel, Debbie Harry, Bill Gates, Ray Liota, Vaclav Havel, Julian Schnabel and many more. In all these spreads, books and awards is a brand of photography that is as gritty as it is honest, as accurate in capturing the mood as it is exact in its message. Kratochvil can literally translate underlying emotions and psychology onto film. As one of the founders of the prestigious VII photo group, Kratochvil has helped build an agency that stands toe to toe with Magnum in the caliber of its members and the quality of its work. In a short time VII has put a new spin on a photographic collective. It is an industry leader in this. Kratochvil has shot for numerous non-profit organizations and humanitarian agencies. Medicines sans Frontiers, the United Nations and Rockefella Foundation are just a few that have been able to contribute to peoples' betterment through Kratochvil's poignant images. Much of his work has been exhibited in locations such as the Louvre's Pyramid, the International Center of Photography in Manhattan, Prague's National Gallery and along with this his images sit in museum collections around the world.  Kratochvil has spent a lifetime capturing the plight of the world's forgotten and the souls of Western culture's celebrities and Western society's most influential. Antonin Kratochvil has a wealth of insight into the times in which he lives and continues to dig deeper into the his particular genre of photography. This makes the photographer and his work a commodity that is sought out on every imaginable level where quality photography is demanded.
